No credit check loans in Canada: six options compared by real cost

If your credit score is the problem, a payday loan is the option you’ll see advertised most, but it isn’t the only one, and it’s rarely the cheapest. Here is every common way to borrow in Canada without a hard credit inquiry, ranked from least to most expensive, with the trade-off each one asks of you.

Reviewed November 2026 by the Jessica’s House editorial team against federal and provincial lending rules. About 4 minutes to read.

Short answer

No credit check loans in Canada include employer pay advances, credit union small-dollar loans, secured credit cards, credit-builder loans, pawn loans and payday loans. Employer advances and some credit union loans cost the least. Payday loans are the fastest and most widely available, but at up to $14 per $100 for a two-week loan, they are the most expensive way to borrow if you need the money for more than one pay cycle.

Each option, in plain terms

Employer pay advance

Some employers will pay part of your earned wages early, either directly through payroll or through an earned-wage app. It’s the cheapest money available because it’s already yours. Ask HR or your manager. It’s a more common request than you might think.

Credit union small-dollar loan

Several Canadian credit unions offer small, short loans designed as payday alternatives, at rates within the 35% APR limit. Membership usually costs a small share deposit. Approval leans on your relationship with the credit union more than on your score.

Secured credit card

You put down a deposit, say $300, and get a card with a $300 limit. There’s no hard check with many issuers, and on-time payments are reported to the bureaus. It won’t help with this week’s emergency, but it’s one of the most reliable ways to rebuild credit before the next one.

Credit-builder loan

The lender holds the loan amount in a locked account while you make monthly payments. Once you’ve finished paying, you get the money. It’s a savings plan that builds credit, and useless for an emergency right now.

Pawn loan

You leave an item, such as jewellery, a laptop or a tool, and get a fraction of its value in cash. If you don’t repay, the pawnbroker keeps the item, and it doesn’t touch your credit. It’s fast and simple, but often expensive, and pawn pricing is less standardized than payday pricing.

Payday loan

Available online in minutes, with income-based approval and $14 per $100 at most. For a single gap you can repay on your next payday, it’s predictable. When it’s renewed again and again, it becomes the most expensive line in this table. See what payday lenders check instead of your score.

Loans to avoid, even without a credit check

  • Any “loan” with an upfront fee. It’s the classic advance-fee scam, and licensed lenders never ask for one.
  • Large “no credit check” instalment loans near 35% APR that add optional insurance to the balance. Insurance can push the true cost well above the advertised rate. Always ask for the APR with and without it.
  • Lenders that aren’t licensed in your province. If it isn’t licensed where you live, your provincial protections may not apply in practice.

If the real issue is debt that has grown over months, borrowing more without a credit check just moves it around. A free non-profit credit counsellor can often reduce the interest on what you already owe. See where to find free help.

Questions people ask

What is the easiest loan to get without a credit check?

Payday loans and pawn loans are the most widely available without a hard credit check. A payday loan needs regular income and a bank account. A pawn loan needs an item of value. Both are among the more expensive options.

Are no credit check loans legal in Canada?

Yes. Lenders can choose not to run a hard credit inquiry. They still have to follow provincial licensing rules and the federal limits: $14 per $100 for payday loans, and 35% APR for most other consumer loans.

Can I get a $5,000 loan with no credit check?

It’s difficult. At that size, most licensed lenders review your credit file, though some specialize in fair or poor credit. Through Jessica’s House, amounts over $1,500 are matched with personal loan lenders, who usually run a credit check before a final offer.
