Payday loans in Prince Edward Island: the 7-day gap and other Island rules

Prince Edward Island stops back-to-back payday borrowing with a mandatory one-week pause between loans. It also hits unlicensed operators where it hurts: if the lender or broker had no PEI licence, the fee on your loan simply isn’t owed.

Short answer

Payday loans in Prince Edward Island are regulated under the province’s Payday Loans Act. The cost is capped at $14 per $100, the largest loan is $1,500 and the longest term is 62 days, and you have until the close of the second day after signing to back out. A week has to pass between paying off one payday loan and starting the next. If the lender or broker wasn’t licensed, you owe no cost of borrowing.

How the seven-day rule works

The clock starts when your last loan is paid off in full, and lenders will want proof of that. Clear a loan on a Monday and the next one can’t start before the following Monday.

Seven days usually means one more pay deposit, which is often enough to discover you don’t need a second loan after all. If you find yourself counting down to day seven, that’s worth a conversation with a free credit counsellor.

Changing your mind on the Island

Sign on a Tuesday and you have until Thursday’s close of business to walk away, with no explanation and no charge. When the lender isn’t open on the deadline day, you get until its next business day. Send written notice and hand back the full advance.

Pin down the late-payment cost first

Late charges vary between lenders, so make the lender spell out its default fees before you commit, and keep that answer. Your agreement must list them too.

A Charlottetown example: borrow $250, and the most it can cost is $35, so you repay $285. You can’t take your next payday loan until seven days after it’s paid off.
